Better Reading Partnership
Developed by our partners, 'Language for Life' in Bradford, this rigorous strategy has helped thousands of Derbyshire children achieve average reading age gains of 9.6 months in 10 weeks. Adult volunteers (or non-teaching staff) become partners who 'teach' children (Y2 to Y8) how to use the complete range of reading strategies.
All materials, including photocopiable masters, are supplied.
The Better Reading Partnership scheme is designed for children who have a reading deficit of 6-18 months and are at risk of failing to reach the national average in SATs. Each child receives three intensive 15 minute one-to-one sessions per week for 10 weeks. Boosting confidence is a priority.
Schools need to invest in a supply of children's literature for the project. BRP brings about the greatest gains when it is used as a structured Reading Intervention Programme. However, some schools have neither the space nor time for out of class sessions. In this case, BRP is a cost effective way of increasing the skills of your non-teaching staff in classroom based reading support.
Our next Better Reading Partners training course are in Nottinghamshire:
14/15 January 09 - Ravenshead
5/6 March 09 - Worksop
