Better Reading Partnership 'In October 2006 my son was given the opportunity to take part in Better Reading Partners, a 10 week course devised to improve pupils reading skills. He has always struggled at school and had a distinct lack of self belief due to the every day difficulties he faced during his school work. For 10 weeks, he had a reading mentor who did one to one reading with him and at home my husband and I tried to get him to read for 10 to 15 minutes a night. As his confidence grew and he discovered he could read, he came on in leaps and bounds. He changed from a little boy saying, 'I can't do that, I'm thick, I'm rubbish' into someone trying his hardest to read the words. He now likes to buy books and reads the sports pages in the paper. He now has the confidence to find a word or sound he can recognise within a larger word and build from there. He's not afraid to have a go! My husband and I would like to say a BIG thank you to Mrs Smith for choosing him to participate and also Janet for being his mentor. Not only did his reading age improve by two and a half years, but I also think his confidence grew by at least that much also!
