Better Reading Partnership

Developed by our partners at EducationBradford, this rigorous strategy has helped thousands of children achieve exceptional reading age gains. In our Nottinghamshire project, children averaged 14.6 months RA gains in only 10 weeks. Teaching Assistants or Adult Volunteers become partners who teach children (Y2 to Y8) how to use the complete range of reading strategies. BRP is an excellent intervention for Wave 2 of ECAR and supports Reading Recovery.
The Better Reading Partnership scheme is designed for children who have a reading deficit of 6-18 months and are at risk of failing to reach the national average in SATs. Each child receives three intensive 15 minute one-to-one sessions per week for 10 weeks. Boosting confidence is a priority.
At the end of each term, schools taking part in ROWA! BRP training are encouraged to send in end of programme reports for those children who have taken part. Set out below are the graphs which show average reading age gains in each year group, as well as teachers' subjective assessment on progress in other aspects of reading.

Schools need to invest in a supply of children's literature for the project. BRP brings about the greatest gains when it is used as a structured Reading Intervention Programme. However, some schools have neither the space nor time for out of class sessions. In this case, BRP is a cost effective way of increasing the skills of your non-teaching staff in classroom based reading support.
3 x half day training sessions (3 hours) - £110 per person or FREE (up to 6 delegates) if you can host the training at your school.
How this works:
- Host school would need an appropriate space to seat up to 18 adults, including adults sized chairs and tables.
- Host school would be responsible for providing refreshments and lunches.
- If the host school can help ROWA! to find 12 delegates from other schools to attend the training, they will receive up to 6 free places on the course.
ROWA is no longer providing BRP training outside Derbyshire. Please contact your Local Education Authority for information on BRP training in your area.
