What we do
School Based Support
Buddy Reading
Using trained older students to help younger children with their reading can be rewarding for all involved. The older 'buddies' learn about reading development and they are trained to use techniques which can really make a difference to their younger partner - fluency, comprehension, a range of decoding strategies, and most importantly enjoyment and confidence in reading. As one headteacher said of the scheme "Buddy Reading is brilliant - everyone wins!"
Read On - Write Away! can arrange Buddy Reading training sessions for your older students - whether it is Yr5/6 working with Yr1/2 or secondary students working with primary aged students.
An awareness-raising staff meeting in the school usually precedes two 90-minute training sessions for 'Buddies'. Training sessions can be planned to fit in with school routine. All materials, including OHTs for your future in-house training sessions, are supplied.
Buddy Reading is designed to help children who lack:
- confidence in reading
- the full range of decoding strategies
- fluency
- comprehension skills
Reading sessions can be flexible to meet the needs of child, school and volunteer.
Buddy Reading works inside and outside the classroom. No additional resources are required.
