What we do
Training Better Words Developed exclusively for ROWA!, this reading game strategy has helped many children in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire schools acquire an age appropriate sight vocabulary. Teaching Assistants or adult volunteers are trained in the use of carefully structured, 'small steps' activities that generate self-confidence and perfectly complement synthetic phonics. Better Words is designed for infants who have 'stalled' after acquiring only a few words sight vocabulary. Each child receives three 15 minute one-to-one games sessions per week for 10 weeks. Average gains of 100 words have been reported by schools. Older children up to Y4 with similar needs have enjoyed success in Better Words. At the end of each term, schools taking part in ROWA! Better Words training are encouraged to send in end of programme reports for those children who have taken part. Set out below are the graphs which show average sight vocabulary gains in each year group, as well as teachers' subjective assessment on progress in other aspects of reading.
All materials, including assessment and recording forms, are supplied in the training pack. Quotes: On the training: "logical", "foolproof", "clear and concise - thank you" Better Words is a straightforward process designed specifically for non-professionals to implement. After training, the only cost is volunteer time. 3 hours training - £110* per person or up to 4 FREE places if you can host the training at your school and help to find 14 delegates from other schools to attend the training. The host school would be responsible for providing a suitable space, furniture, equipment and refreshments for up to 20 adults.
