Stick At It!
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What happens if someone is ill?
Don't worry. This is an intervention and that is why you are recommended to complete it over 10 weeks. It would not be as effective if you kept doing it forever. If someone is ill, or something else crops up which stops you following the programme remember that you have missed some sessions and give yourself an extra week or two.
2. What happens if I can't get to the library?
Don't worry. You will have a good selection of books that you can use as familiar material. It is unlikely that your child will have read all of the books all the way through so you could read parts of the books that you have not read before. Alternatively, you could look for other things to read - for example there could be a website that your child is interested in.
3. What happens if I have a lot of books at home? Do I still have to go to the library?
It's great that you have a lot of books in your home. Please feel free to use books that you have, but there are a few things to remember:
- to complete this project your child will use at least 30 books
- the books need to be the right level of difficulty
- the books need to match the things your child is interested in
- it's more motivating if a child has chosen their own book
- going to the library adds an experience to this which your child won't get if you only use books from home.
4. What happens if other children want to join in?
Don't worry. It's great if all of your children read or play word games together - but encourage this to happen after the 15 minute session. For these few weeks these sessions need to be focussed and directed.
5. What happens if my child moves from my home?
If your child moves from your home you will obviously have to stop your work on the project. Please let us know that this has happened as we may be able to put in place some further support for your child. It is sad that you will not be able to see the work through to the end of the sessions but hopefully you will find that you have gained a lot of skills and knowledge which are valuable in the way you support other children.
6. What happens at the end of the 10 weeks?
- You and your child will be invited to join in a celebration of what you have done - to say well done - you stuck at it!
- We will visit you at home to repeat the assessment to find out what your child's reading age is.
- We will collect together the views of everyone who has been involved in this and let you know what they thought. We will ask you and your child to be a part of this by answering a few questions about what you have done and what it felt like. This will probably happen at the same time that we visit to find out what your child's reading age is.
- You can continue to visit the library, share books with your child and help them in the ways you have been doing. We would recommend that you do this in a less formal way; don't try to keep to 3 times a week for 15 minutes.
- We will let you know of other reading events that are happening.
