Stick At It!
And then...
The first Stick At It! project finished in late spring 2009, and our work on the evaluation report began, as well as final preparations for the celebration event.
The interim evaluation is available to download here.
The celebration was a low-key but wonderful event at Mickleover Library in June. After a buffet tea, Sarah (Director of ROWA!) kicked off the proceedings and introduced Caroline Pitcher (children's author) who presented certificates to all the children. Mark Gwynne Jones dazzled the audience with performances of his best children's poetry. Children received two vouchers for books from a wide range provided by Gemma Books. There were a few times that tissues were needed! (One young boy was heard to say: "Wow! Can I keep them? No-one's ever given me a book before.")
And then...
Of course, improvements to the children's reading ages were important to the success of the project. What is more important, however, is that the gains are sustained (we will be going back to test the children again in the autumn term) and that the children continue to enjoy reading. We encouraged the children to continue with their library visits and to join the Summer Reading Challenge. Annette then sent out, just before the summer holidays, some stamped, addressed envelopes to the children, asking them to let us know what books they had read (with a short review if they wanted).
