B) Pen and Paper Activities

Before trying any of these decide whether it is better for you or your child to write.

5. Hangman - good for building words, using letter combinations, word recognition

hangman One person chooses a word (which could be a word you have been working on) puts down a "_" for each letter in the word. The other person suggests a letter to fill the gaps. If the letter is in the word it is written in the place(s) where it would go. If the letter is not in the word the gallows is started one line at a time. (Keep a record of the letters that have been said).

6. How Many Words?

How many words of 3 letters or more can you make from the letters in these words:

7. Town and Country: good for helping distinguish letter sounds.
Make a list of 10 different categories. Choose a letter - and see how quickly you and your child can list one thing for each category starting with that letter.

Examples of categories you could use:

Town, country, colour, football team, clothing, food, plant, drink, film, sport, animal, pop group, make of car, boy's name, girl's name.

8. Write a diary: good for practising days of the week, months and numbers. Write a diary showing appointments for a certain period - a week or a month. Or you could write a birthday diary - putting down the day and month of birthdays of your friends and family.

9. Write a shopping list: this could be for food, clothes, presents, or anything else you can think of.

10. Write labels: make some labels for jars, drawers, cupboards, or anything else you can think of.

11. Is it a word? For this you will need copies of the Is it a Word? sheets - the instructions are on the top of each sheet.

12. Vowel pairs: Use the vowel pair sheet and see how many words you can complete.

13. Word chain: Write down a three, four or five letter word. Turn it into another word by replacing one letter - see how long you can keep this going.
Examples:
Three letters: mat, met, men, ten, tan, pan, pat, pot, got, lot
Four letters: ship, shop, slop, slip, slim, slum, glum, glut, glue
Five letters: plate, plane, plans, flans, flats, slats, slots, shots
