Stick At It!

5 Minute Activities

F) Card Games - using the Stick At It! blank pack:

28. Pairs: write words on the blank cards (repeat each word once). Spread the words out face down on a flat surface. Take it in turns to turn over two cards at a time. The aim is to find a matching pair. If you match a pair you keep the cards and have another go. The winner is the person with the most pairs.

29. Snap: write words on the blank cards (you can repeat words three or four times). Then deal out the cards between you and play SNAP - by turning cards over together and shouting "SNAP" if the words are the same. The person to shout snap first wins the cards which have been turned over. The overall winner is the person who wins all of the cards.

30. Kim's Game: write between 8-12 words, some easy and some of which your child will find challenging on the cards. Allow 1 to 2 minutes to study the cards then turn them over, shuffle them and take one away. Turn them face up again and try to identify which word is missing.

31. Tiddley Winks: you will need some thin, plastic counters for this game. Write 10/12 words on cards and spread them out. Flip the counters until one lands on a card and read the word aloud.

32. Compounds: a compound is a word which is made up of two shorter words. Write some short words on the cards (there are some suggestions below) and see how quickly your child can match them to make the compound word. You can also play this as a "pairs" game as in 28.

Short words:

lip/stick play/time play/ground sun/shine rain/drop
