Small Talk

Click here to find out about our next Small Talk training sessions

Small Talk helps parents'carers to develop and extend their children's language and give them the best possible start in life. This helps the children to:

  • make friends
  • learn new things
  • tell others how they think and feel
  • share
  • discover and problem solve
  • learn to read and write
  • and most importantly be happy and confident

It is a short training course of 2 x 2 hour sessions about 8 weeks apart. The sessions provide four things for parents/carers to take away with them:

  • A poster of language suggestions
  • A poster for children about Good Talking
  • A game to encourage talking
  • A booklet with tips and suggestions to support language development

Parents/carers who have taken the course say it helped them:

  • "It's given me new ways of doing things."
  • "It's helped me be more confident and relaxed and to do different things with them."

And their children:

  • "The baby has started to use some of the language that I have used with her."
  • "They put more words together in sentences."
  • "It's contributed to managing their behaviour better, especially when we're shopping and talking about things in the shop."
