Family Literacy

This is a 12 week programme in Literacy for parents or carers of primary school children. Each session lasts 3 hours.

The programmes are intended for adults who do not have a Level 2 qualification in Literacy and, if they wish, will prepare them to take a national qualification. This can take place during the programme or shortly afterwards. The course is planned jointly by a teacher and an Adult Education tutor.

Each session has 3 parts:

  1. for the adults - working with a specially trained adult tutor to extend their own literacy skills and to find out about ways of supporting their children's learning;
  2. for the children - working with their teacher in a separate room towards carefully planned targets;
  3. for the adults and children - tutor and teacher come together in a joint session when parents can put into practice ways of helping with their child's learning in literacy.

Teacher and tutor create a scheme of work centred on the identified needs of the children and adults:

  • to improve the skills of the target adults and to accredit that learning;
  • to improve the skills of the target children;
  • to develop the relationship between home and school and offer a joint learning programme;
  • to improve the family learning practices of the whole school and community;
  • to raise awareness and knowledge of family learning;
  • to ensure the programme is sustained beyond the life of the project.

Family Literacy programmes will include a visit to the local library.
