Engaging Erewash

The aim of this ESF project in partnership with Derbyshire Adult Community Education Service is to develop and deliver integrated literacy, language and numeracy into qualification based, flexible, “first steps” learning that will build the confidence, motivation and skills of individuals in the disadvantaged communities in Erewash enabling them to progress to further learning provision provided by Derbyshire Adult Community Education Service.  The original 2 year project was due to finish in June 2007 but has been extended by the Derbyshire Learning and Skills Council until June 2008.

Project Case Study:

Lisa left school with no qualifications. She worked in a curtain shop and then did a City and Guilds qualification in Retail, working part time as she had two young children.

Lisa found out about a KNEX Numeracy course through her children's school and decided that it would be fun to come along and try for a maths qualification. She felt that the course had brushed up her numeracy skills and had given her an insight into how her children learn at school. Lisa has taken her Level 1 Numeracy exam and is awaiting her results. After doing this course her ambition is now to become a teaching assistant.
