Year One of the Project (2009/10) was about describing how families are currently supported and encouraged to become 'readers'. We concentrated on describing the situation for the families with the greatest need. Three small areas were identified which showed the highest scores on indices of multiple deprivation, lower educational attainment scores in Early Years and Key Stage 1 and the highest populations of children under five. In these areas we asked parents for their thoughts about reading and writing and what they actually did with their children. We also asked them for their views on existing support programmes.
At the same time we talked to professionals working in a support role with families about their experience of their clients' reading and writing skills.
The results of these two investigations were shared at a Dissemination and Planning day. Please find more information about this under Planning Event in Facts, News and Research.
Year two of the project developed trial projects from the ideas captured at the Dissemination and Planning day.
In Suggestions for Pilot Projects you can read about the ideas that came forward at the Dissemination and Planning Day. |
