Who we are
History of ROWA!
Read On - Write Away! (ROWA!) was launched in 1997 as a five-year community literacy initiative to raise standards of literacy and contribute to the regeneration of Derbyshire. ROWA! was set up as a response to the common view held at the time by a range of agencies in Derbyshire of the need for a local organisation to pull together existing literacy initiatives. The intention was that the independent nature of the organisation would allow scope for creative partnerships drawing on the experiences and expertise of the local education authority, schools, libraries, voluntary organisations, Training and Enterprise Councils and employers.
When ROWA! was established in 1997, over 50% of the funding came from Single Regeneration Budget funding, and this funding was used to develop new activity which was then rolled out across the whole area. As ROWA! grew, several successful bids for external funding were made, each enabling ROWA! to develop more and varied ways of working with adults and children in communities.
