Story Telling: The Framegame No 10

The Cup Match

In London, on a scorching evening in the middle of summer, an eight year old boy called Todd, who was an extremely big fan of Melchester United, tried to persuade his grandad to take him to the Cup Match. Grandad was an electrician who Todd thought was the most boring person in the world.

Todd begged his grandad to take him to the match by saying, "Please, please, I promise to wash the dishes for a week and mow the grass for you."
Grandad replied, "OK just this once."

During the match, in the 89th minute, David Buckham was given a penalty. The match was very close, the score being 2-2. Suddenly, before the penalty, there was a blackout because the power failed, causing the lights to go off. People started to panic, shout and scream and then all of a sudden, silence fell.

After a while the loudspeaker clicked on and a commentator asked the crow, "Do we have an electrician out there?" Todd nudged his grandad on the shoulder and then grandad stood up and said, "I'm an electrician, I can help you." He quickly made the repair, it only took 10 minutes and the match re-started. The crowd cheered when David Buckham went onto the pitch to take the penalty. David Buckham scored and the crowd went wild with excitement.

Todd's grandad saved the day and he was no longer a boring grandad. For his reward he got season tickets for him and Todd.

Good Endings: Tom, Ellie O, James, Nakai, Haziq and Ellie were challenged to make up a story ending, with a puzzling theme, to complete a story they read as a group, about a UFO. Can you spot the WOW words?

U F O

...When the spinning stopped, to their amazement, Ravi and Alan spied two monster looking aliens with five squidgy arms, like Play Dough, and ten legs. They left the sphere trailing a gooey, slimy mess behind them. Ravi wanted to follow the track and Alan agreed. Alan saw the aliens looking for information about people on earth.

Suddenly, the boys heard a noise coming from the sphere and the aliens ran towards it. Within 10 seconds the sphere zoomed away leaving Ravi and Alan worried that the aliens would return and invade the entire earth.

Story Telling: Framegame 11

Once again, Bonsai and Poplar POW! groups came together to use the story plan about a family trapped in their home during a flood and then told the story with a Year 1 audience in mind. We hope you enjoy reading it too.

The Flash Flood

It was a gloomy night in autumn, at about midnight, when Beth, who was ten, her mum and grandpa were tucked up in bed. They lived in a house by the River Steel and every year there was a big flood which covered nearly the whole town. That night it was raining heavily and the river began to rise.

The police rushed around the town banging loudly on everybody's door. When they got to Beth's house the police cried urgently, "Get up quick, the river's about to burst its bank." Beth was worried because grandpa was very weak and couldn't move quickly, so Beth and her mum grabbed him under his arms and lifted him out of his bed. As quickly as they could they got him down the stairs where they thought they would be safe, but the door at the front of the house burst open and water rushed in. They realised they were in trouble and struggled back upstairs.

Because the phone wasn't working Beth had a great plan. It was to go into the loft and find the dinghy she usually used for holidays. After, she opened the window in the bedroom, quickly blew up the dinghy and threw it out. Beth jumped in first and mum helped grandpa out of the window into the dinghy, then...

...mum flopped in. The dinghy got swept away down the street and everyone was scared and worried.

At long last, after 30 minutes, a helicopter spotted them and winched them up to safety. As grandpa needed urgent hospital treatment, the helicopter rushed to the hospital. Fortunately, Beth and her mum were OK even though they were cold and wet.

Nakai, Ellie, Haziq and Ellie O read a story about two dogs. One was a large Labrador and the other was a smaller Scottie dog. They did everything together.

Everything was OK until, just the other day, Major the Labrador fell ill...

Scottie was devastated because his best friend was struggling to breathe and he began to bark loudly so that someone would come and help. A kind old lady was walking close by when she heard the barking and saw the dogs at the corner of the road. She tried to walk quickly. Meanwhile, a van stopped because the driver saw the dogs and thought they might need some help.

The driver hopped out of the van and he and the old lady bent down to look at the poor dog. He checked the dog's breathing and it was very slow, so he decided to gently lift Major into the back of his van. Scottie leapt in beside Major and the old lady got in the van next to the driver.

Off they went to the local vets where Major was put on to a table. The vet said, "This dog has a serious disease and I am sorry he is going to die very soon." Scottie was crying and whimpering. After a few minutes, sadly, Major closed his eyes and went to sleep forever.

Scottie ran and ran away from the vets and was not seen again.

The MV Seamaster Adventure

One late evening as it was getting dark in the North Sea, a large fishing boat the MV Seamaster with its crew, the skipper Bill Rumsey and Kate Davy as the deckhand was sailing.

As usual the crew dragged the nets over on deck with a big haul of fish. This time was different. Among the fish was a silver metal object.

The skipper looked surprised, so did Kate as they untangled the cylinder from the net. They both wondered what was inside as it looked like a container for something. Kate wondered if it could be secret letters even some money inside. Skipper Rumsey thought it could be long lost treasure maps with X marking the spot for buried treasure. "It looks dangerous to me," said Kate cautiously. "Let's put it in the cabin where it will be safe until we can get it home." Skipper agreed, they found a place for the container then they both went to sleep.

During the night Kate was woken by a ticking sound, she hastily woke up the skipper and she whispered, "It's ticking." the Skipper immediately sprang into action. "We must get it off the boat before it explodes!" he cried. When it stopped they both looked at the container. The lid slowly popped open. Kate and Skipper still looked at the container waiting for something more to happen but nothing did.

Gingerly they both reached for the container and took the lid off and peered inside. To their surprise there was a note, and an old record, a newspaper and pictures. The note read:-

To all concerned who find the tie capsule. This is a time capsule from the 1960's. Here is the latest newspaper of this time. Here is a record of the famous pop group of this time and pictures of the clothes we wore.

Skipper and Kate found the thing very interesting and wondered as they sailed back home who might have made the time capsule.

The Invitation
(written by Carly, Jalle, Louis and Mitchell)

It almost seemed as if someone, or something, was inviting the three friends inside. As they walked into the spooky house, there were spider's cobwebs dangling from the ceiling and the walls. There was a rotten smell coming from the kitchen. As they entred the kitchen door it creaked open. On the table was a picture of the people who used to live there before.

Suddenly there was a noise coming from the living room. They quietly crept to the living room to see what was making that noise. In front of them was a mirror on the wall, they could see a reflection of an old soldier looking straight at them.

Then the friends screamed and ran out the house. There in front of them was the old soldier. The friends sprinted out the house as fast as they could. Once outside they gasped from breath, they looked at each other in amazement as Terri was missing.

Good Story Ending by 4 Poplar

F I R E !

... little Meg was terrified by the smoke and the noise from the fire alarm, so she hid in the cellar. Just then Mr and Mrs Johnson started to panic as the smoke was getting thicker and dark. Rushing through the door Mr Johnson called the fire service on his mobile phone as Mrs Johnson shouted, "Where is little Meg?"

They can hear the fire engine rushing toward them, with its flashing lights warning all. "Meg, Meg," shouted Mrs Johnson. "Where is little Meg?" Out of the big red engine e=came this huge fireman with his big black boots and long heavy coat.
"Where's the fire, love?" he asked.
"In the kitchen," Mrs Johnson replied. "It's little Meg, we can't find her."
"Don't panic, Missus, we'll find her, how old is the child?" the fireman asked.
"Oh no, Meg is our cat," said Mr Johnson. The huge fireman boldly braved the smoke and entered the blazing house. Mr and Mrs Johnson stood looking on at the rest of the fireman taking control of the scorching flames.

Suddenly out of the smothering ashes came a grey figure. It was the fireman holding a little bundle in his arms. It was little Meg. She was covered in black ash, but she was safe, back in the arms of Mrs Johnson.

Storytelling: The Framegame No 5

Hannah, Kasim, Jack and Alex (Bonsai Group) shared the story telling of the strange object caught in the fishing net by the crew of MV Seamaster. They were given a challenge to complete the activity in 15 minutes and they succeeded. Read on!

On Board MV Seamaster

One misty, dark night a fishing boat called MV Seamaster went out in to the North Sea. On board the fishing boat was a crew. Bill Rumsey was the skipper and Kate Davy was the deckhand.

Suddenly, they found a peculiar metal cylinder caught up in the net as they were fishing. The skipper thought it could be something he could sell for a lot of money. He and Kate pulled and pulled the net with the cylinder inside it, on board the deck but Kate yelled, "No, it might be dangerous!"

When it was getting darker, Kate heard a strange ticking noise and she felt a bit worried. She began to panic when the crew wanted to abandon the boat. Kate shouted to the skipper, "The cylinder is ticking, let's throw it over the edge of the boat into the sea."

Two minutes later the sea was lit up by the explosion coming from the cylinder. The Seamaster got flooded by the explosion but everyone was safe. PHEW!

Good Endings: The Fire!

The Bonsai POW! group read the beginning of a story about a little kitten and a house smoke alarm ringing and chose a suitable ending for the story. They picked the "very lucky" mood card and as a group they did a very good job of telling the story ending. What do you think?

Fire!

Megs was terrified by the screeching noise of the smoke alarm so she hid in the messy cupboard under the stairs where smelly shoes and broken toys were spread out.

She squeezed in to mum's shoe and shivered and made a soft noise like a crying hungry baby. Megs began to smell smoke, so she jumped up onto a box and put her paw on the door handle.

The door opened, so she carefully tiptoed towards the cat flap and made a very lucky escape!

Good Endings: A Walk on the Beach

Hannah, Jack, Alex and Kasim read "A Walk on the Beach" and chose the "scary" theme card for the ending, but we all felt Tom had a lucky escape. What do you think?

A Walk on the Beach

Tom was the first to disappear into the soggy, cold sand. He got sucked down under the beach into a dark, mysterious cave. Tom shivered and tried to punch at the sand so he could escape to freedom. As he punched, the sand fell down over his head so he could not see. Suddenly his friends lowered a piece of rope which Tom used to pull himself out. All the friends were safe!

Good Endings - 28th September 2009

The Bonsai and Poplar POW! Groups showed how fantastic they are at telling stories. They read the story card Night Drive and Preston chose the Mood Card "No Casualties" for the group to base their story ending on.

Night Drive

I was really scared that Grandma and me would slide off the road into the field. Suddenly Grandma lost control of the car and it slid and spun around like a spinning top, ending up upside down in a dark, pitch black, muddy, swampy ditch. Grandma was worried that her grandson was hurt. He was OK but a bit shocked. Grandma opened the door and got out first then helped him out. She used her mobile phone to phone 999 for the rescue service. The operator asked Grandma if there were any casualties. She exclaimed, "Thankfully we are OK."

Good Endings - 20th October 2009

Hiba, Mohammed, Preston and Chloe listened to a short story beginning about some boys sledging on sacks down a steep hill. They then chose to use the "funny" Mood Card to tell the ending which Mrs Dankowycz scribed.

Sledge Race!
sledging

The boys flew down the hill like a powerful rocket and zoomed and boomed and banged into a black, metal fence. The fence split open and the boys shot through the middle and landed in an icy pond, upside down on their heads. Suddenly a fish jumped up and pulled each boy out of the water by dragging them by their pants.

When the boys were out of the water they realised they were covered in smelly, slimy fish goo. They began to laugh so loud at each other. The only way they could get home was to put their sacks on over their trousers and hop along the road. All the drivers were laughing so loud that they nearly crashed their cars!

Good Endings - 9th November 2009

Bonsai Group and Poplar Group worked together on a slightly scary and puzzling ending to "The Old Tin Chest" story. Mrs Dankowycz and Mrs King were impressed with their story telling. Read it and see what you think.

THE OLD TIN CHEST

Shamir opened the chest carefully and he was shocked to see a bright red heart which was puping and jumping and trying to get out because it could see a shining light. Shamir did not know who the heart belonged to until he saw a terrifying dragon hanging in the tree. The dragon was guarding the key to the chest because the heart had special powers and the dragon's life inside it and he did not want anyone to use the powers.

He whistled loudly to the dragon to come down from the tree. As the dragon swooped down he dropped the shiny key and quickly locked the chest to keep the powers inside. Shamir wondered what the powers were but he would never find out!

The Framegame No 3 - September 2009

The Bonsai and Poplar POW! groups worked together with Mrs Dankowycz and Mrs King to read a story plan and create a story. What do you think about their shared text? We think it is brilliant!

One day outside the old Co-op which had closed down years ago, Dave and Andy who were thirteen years old and had run away from home were hiding from the police and their parents.

Inside the shop it was dark and scary and that's why they were outside. Suddenly Andy heard a whistling noise coming from the back of the shop. They looked through the dusty window and felt really, really scared when they saw a white figure flying around. They began to panic and screamed.

Suddenly they saw a man with a thin face and an enormous white body walking towards them. They ran away screaming and shouting, "Help!"
Dave panicked and cried, "It's a man in a white coat!"

The man stared at he boys then took off his white coat. Dave and Andy were shocked when he took off twelve coats. They realised that the man was a ghost was actually a tramp who had found the coats in an old box in the shop.

The boys were so frightened that they ran like crazy back home and made peace with their parents.

The Framegame No 4 - October 2009

Hiba, Chloe, Oliver, Thomas, Kirsty and Tom used a story plan about two children's experience at the dentist to tell their story, which Mrs Dankowycz scribed.

The Big Fillings

One day at the dentist two children called Charlotte and Jake were waiting with other people as well as mum. They were both twins and they were both aged eleven. Charlotte was very, very scared of the dentists but Jake was really brave.

Jake started to frighten his sister by telling her that she was going to have a big needle in her gum to make it numb. Charlotte began to cry and shiver because she was worried. Then the dentist said it was Charlotte's turn. She tried to run out of the surgery but her mum dragged her back. Jake had a huge grin on his face.

The dentist told her that she would have to have two fillings because her gums would get infected and diseased if she didn't.

When she had her fillings the dentist gave her a sticker and when she came out smiling, Jake was surprised. Charlotte whispered in his ear, "You're next and you're having eight fillings. Ha, ha!". Jake was really cross and thought she was telling lies.

He went into the dentist's room and as the dentist told him about the fillings he fainted on the dentist chair. The dentist quickly filled his teeth and he was so upset afterwards and sleepy that his mum had to carry him to the car. Charlotte was dancing around and giggling!

Good Endings - Tuesday 2nd June 2009

Sky, Luke, Elliott and Grace chose a story called UFO to inspire them to write a good ending, using a mood card with the theme sci-fi. They had great ideas and used some interesting adjectives, adverbs and powerful verbs. What do you think of their shared writing work?

All of a sudden the giant sphere got slower and slower till it lost power and dropped heavily in the big golden corn field. Ravi and Alan sneaked up on the silver sphere and saw a door open and smoke come out of it. The smoke formed like a cloud around Ravi and Alan and this terrified them. They noticed three ugly huge aliens with greenish purple skin. One of them was friendly and said, "Hello, how do you do?"
Alan replied in a nervous voice, "H-E-L-L-O."
Ravi was scared and screamed, "Can we go now?"
There was another puff of smoke and Ravi and Alan realised that they were in the space ship being taken away. Where?
Back home to their mum and dad of course!

Tuesday 22nd June:
The POW! group made up this story using the story frame for the Framegame No 1. As they were offering ideas and improving the sentences, Mrs Dankowycz acted as the scribe. What do you think about their efforts?

Amy and Beth, two eleven year old girls were leaving the "High School Concert" at St Cuthbert's Primary School. It was a very dark night because the lamp post lights were not working.

They were chatting in a low voice about the concert when suddenly a thief swiped Amy's bag out of her hand. She was worried because her mobile phone, money and house keys were in the bag. Beth shouted, "Help, someone's stolen Amy's bag." Another year six child ran quickly to try and get the bag back which was not a very good idea.

The thief ran so fast that he ran into a lamp post and knocked himself out. The child who was following him snatched the bag out of his hand and he ran back to Amy.

Amy thanked the child and phoned the police. The police came quickly and arrested the thief.

The POW! group were extremely enthusiastic about the idea of writing a shared story using the story plan from the Framegame. They had some great sentence ideas, don't you agree? Tim and Tom hadn't a clue about how the fire started but were very sensible. Do you think mum and dad left them alone again?

One gloomy evening at 10 o'clock Tom and Tim were in their house in the bedroom. They were trying to get to sleep but they could hear barking downstairs.

Max the dog, sometimes curled up like a cat on the end of Tim's bed but that night the boys had locked him out of the bedroom.

Suddenly, the dog started scratching the door and howling. They were cross with Max and told him to be quiet. They opened the door quickly and found smoke rising from downstairs in the living room.

Tom and Tim thought about the escape plan mum and dad had told them about. They tied sheets together tightly to make a rope which they tied to the bed leg closest to the window. Tim opened the window and climbed down the rope to safety, then shouted Tom to come down.

Their mum and dad had no idea about the fire because they had gone out to play Bingo. The next door neighbour telephoned the Fire Brigade who came really, really quickly, put the fire out and rescued Max.

Tom and Tim thought that the dog had died. They were so happy to see him and their parents.

Good Endings by the Yr4 POW! Group at Parkdale Primary School, Carlton, Notts:

Everyone in the POW! group listened to the first part of a short story. Then Arron chose a mood ard which everyone used to tell the end of the story. The theme card was "shocking" and the story title was "Major and Scottie".

Major and Scottie

Major fell ill and had to go to the vets.  The vet was shocked to find that Major had swallowed a huge bone which had got stuck in his stomach.  He had to operate on Major to remove it.

Major was put to sleep during the operation.  When he woke up he was fine.  The vet was really shocked that he got up and ran out of the building to his friend Scottie.  Scottie was pleased that Major was alive and gave him a big lick.  The vet told everyone how shocking it was to find such a big bone.

The POW! group chose the story called "Fire!" to read which inspired them to write a happy ending in our shared writing session 10 Tuesday 10th February 2009. What do you think about the ending they chose?

Fire!

Little Megs was terrified by the smoke and the noise so she hid in the cupboard under the stairs. Megs was feeling scared because she had never heard that noise before. She didn't know that it was the smoke alarm.

The cupboard was dark and spooky and it was full of boxes, cobwebs and shoes.

Suddenly, she got so scared that she shook, but then Mrs Johnson heard the cat meowing and came and grabbed her, escaping through the window. Mrs Johnson called the fire brigade who put the fire out. Megs was really happy and went to look for her kittens. They were safe and very glad to see her.

Arron, Chloe, Hollie and Rowan chose the story ending card "very lucky" and really got involved with the shared writing activity. They used some great vocabulary including alliteration (Monday 2nd March 2009)

The Old Tin Chest

After a few minutes digging under the dead grass Shamir found a rusty, old tin chest. Shamir was worried that his Grandpa might be angry that he had dug up the grass because he had been told not to. He was shaking with excitement because he thought there might be gold in the rusty chest. Shamir opened it quietly so no one could hear him. Then he opened his eyes wide because he saw gold coins and something wriggling around.

Shamir quickly ran into the house for a torch and then top-toed back to the garden shining his torch, so that he could see where he was going. When he got back to the chest he saw a slithery snake trying to get out of the rusty tin Shamir was very frightened and he almost fainted. The snake lifted his neck up as if he was going to bite him and he dodged out of the way slamming the lid shut.

Shamir left the chest on the lawn and thought he had had a lucky escape. Grandpa came out to see what was hapening because he had seen the torch light and he wondered who was outside. He saw that Shamir was hiding behind the tree. Shamir was pleased to see Grandpa and he confessed that he had dug up the grass and opened the chest to find the slithery snake. Grandpa was a bit cross and agreed that Shamir had a lucky escape!

Chloe, Rowan and Hollie chose the theme card "scary" for the ending to the story called "The Invitation". They used the Door Sentence Opener cards to select more interesting beginnings (9th March 2009)

The Invitation

The three friends talked to each other about what could be behind the door that they thought was locked. One of the teenagers tried the rusty door handle and it opened with a squeak. The door handle fell off and made a very noisy bang on the broken floor boards. They all jumped back outside into a muddy puddle. Meanwhile Mina saw a shadow going very slowly across the door and it made her tremble.

The door opened by itself and they tip-toed inside because they heard a child laughing. They saw a child in the kitchen laughing but when they went over to it they saw it was a doll. On the doll's back was a button and they pressed it and the doll stopped laughing.

Dave was wondering who turned the button on because no one else was in the house. They were all petrified and ran as fast as they could outside and Dave looked up and saw a sign warning "Haunted House Do Not Enter!"

Everyone learned a lesson, not to go into strange houses.
